June 2007

Dear Candidate,

Congratulations on receiving a high rank in AIEEE-2007 examination. Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to our Institute.

IIIT Hyderabad is a research university set up for the advancement of information technologies and is today rated among top 10 technology schools of the country. Most institutions measure their success through the placement record of their graduating students and IIIT-H is doing exceedingly well on this count. However, we measure our success by the research done at the Institute, and the impact of technologies developed here on industry and society. Faculty and students at the institute are working on several innovative technologies that have the potential to make a global impact. Some of these have been in the news and include machine translation, search engines, speech recognition and synthesis, robotics, multi agent systems, data engineering, computer vision, graphics, VLSI, wireless communications, information security, etc. We have built-up the strongest academic research groups in the country in several areas of Computer Science within a short span of 4-5 years.

IIIT-H is perhaps the only institute in the country where even the B.Tech students can opt to do research. A unique flexible curriculum allows the student to exercise choices in courses to suit their research interests. As a result, those students fit better at IIIT-H who have a mind and interest in research, and a perseverance to develop technologies. We prepare our students to become entrepreneurs, to take up challenging design jobs rather than routine programming jobs, or to take up research careers in industrial research labs or universities by doing Masters or PhD anywhere in the world. Students keen to go for higher study may consider joining the 5-year Dual-Degree Programme now itself, which is a premium programme.

For those who might need financial assistance, you would be glad to know that the institute has entered an MoU with Andhra Bank to provide educational loans. The institute has also several financial supports for needy students.  Assistantship opportunities are available after first year.

Besides technical excellence, the congenial atmosphere at the Institute promotes culture, sports, self-governance, and values, all of which help the students towards becoming complete human beings. For the last two years, there is a special emphasis on value education and inculcating a sense of responsibility. You should be prepared to do your own work in the hostel.

In case you wish to opt for admission into IIIT-H during central counseling, we ask you to evaluate  for yourself whether you have the determination to work hard, aptitude for serious studies, desire to develop technology, and willingness to live up to the Institute ideals of simple living and high thinking. You should be a knowledge seeker, rather than a routine-job seeker. Please judge yourself before opting for admission here.

With best wishes, and congratulations once again on your success.

Yours truly,

Student Achievements

Many of our B.Tech students have published research papers in international conferences in India and abroad. At the R&D Showcase organized at the Institute in March 2007, about 180 projects were on display by the different research groups, and about 800 visitors visited them.  Here are some of the successes of our students in international contests:

In the year of 2007:

1.      Two of the Robotics Research Centre students were selected for an event “Microsoft Tech Vista” conducted by Microsoft to display their projects on Integrated Mobile Robotic Navigation System and Micro Robot.

2.      Two teams (B.Tech & MS students) have been selected out of 1000 proposals for final round of the Intel India Research Contest (IIRC-2007), for their research work on " Novel High-Speed Architecture for 32-bit ALU using Hybrid Logic Style” and “Process Variation Aware Adaptive Cache Architecture.

3.      IIIT achieved a major success by winning world automatic summarization contest organized by NIST, USA. This contest has leading US universities as contestants.

4.      One MS student has gone for presenting a full paper at the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS-2007) New Orleans, USA from May 27-30, 2007.

5.      The e-Sagu project was received an award for best e-governance project from CSI-Nihilent e-Governance awards 2005-06.

6.      One student selected for inclusion in the Indian youth delegation to China from 6-17 June, 2007 to promote mutual understanding of values and cultures amongst the youth and to develop better relations between India and China

In the year of 2006:

7.      IIIT achieved a major success by winning world automatic summarization contest organized by NIST, USA. This contest has leading US universities as contestants.

8.      One B.Tech student has been selected for demonstration of “MS SQL Learning Suite” at Microsoft Faculty Summit, Seattle.

9.      Two MS/PhD students have been selected out of 500 proposals for finals in Intel India student research contest, for their research work on “Interface Independent Network-on-chip for set-top Box/VoIP Applications”

In the year of 2005:

10. A team of IIIT-H B.Tech students won 3rd prize in Robo Rescue Simulation Competition (in Robocup 2005) in Osaka, Japan. IIIT-h was the only team from India which qualified to participate in this prestigious contest.
