Post Graduate Program in IT for Building Science
IIIT offers a masters program of IT applications in the domain of building science. Building science is a multidisciplinary science which involves application of various disciplines of architecture, structures, electrical , mechanical, energy both conventional and non-conventional and IT. This course aims at applying IT knowledge for an integrated development of the building science.

The curriculum focuses on the use of IT for the design of better construction methods and better buildings. Such buildings would be affordable, energy efficient, comfortable, safe, responsive to inhabitants and provide a healthy environment. They will have a combination of traditional and advanced materials, and will house intelligent controls. Using computer-aided techniques, their design target total performance over their life cycle taking into consideration factors such as wind, noise, solar energy, pollutants and occupancy.
Emphasis is being laid on studying, applying, improving and even inventing various IT tools such as:
- Visualization
- Optimisation
- Structural modelling for earthquake resistance
- Thermal, light, and acoustic modelling
- Building automation
- Planning and modelling of various building services
Infrastructure
The institute has a 'Building Science' laboratory with IBM computers, A0 plotter, digital overhead projector and other supporting infrastructure. The software support includes MATLAB, STAAD, Ansys, CATIA, SAS, PowerDOE, Lumen Micro, Radiance, GenOpt, Energy Plus, energy-10 and Autodesk products.
Building automation lab equipped with data acquisition and control system, power line carrier devices and various other equipment.
Research activities
Research is carried out in the use of IT tools for the building sector. A number of research projects are being carried out in the following areas:
- Wireless sensors
- Occupancy sensors
- Fuzzy logic base controllers
PG program
Students are enrolled into this program through an entrance exam conducted by IIIT every year. The prerequisite for this program is that the student should possess a graduate degree in architecture or civil engineering. The students are expected to have proficiency in mathematics, programming and physics in addition to sound domain knowledge. The students should have the inclination and willingness to learn and apply knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment.
The students after successful completion of program, will have an in-depth professional knowledge to handle problems concerning planning, design and implementation of building science projects. They will have adequate knowledge to interact with specialists engaged on the projects. They will also have adequate knowledge and skills to develop IT applications in the building science.
Students enrolled in the program have to take five compulsory courses covering basic IT and two domain related courses which cover the domain comprehensively. In addition specialized courses are offered in two major areas of building services and structures which aim at addressing the requirements and needs in the context of industrial applications.
