The faculty and students of the Institute showed that how with just a little effort, we can make a difference to the world we live in. On Friday, the 5th of April, some faculty members spotted that six two hundred year old banyan trees opposite to the institute entrance were being cut in order to widen the access road to the National Games village, which abuts the institute. They immediately gathered a few students and went to the site to oppose this. After a long and heated discussion, a written objection signed by the faculty and the students of the Institute was presented to the site engineer as a result of which the work was stopped for the time being.

The Deputy Executive Engineer visited the Institute the next day to discuss an alternate plan presented by the institute, wherein it was possible to realign the proposed road by a few feet so that these trees could be saved. The Institute also stated that it had no objection in allowing the main road to come as close to its boundary wall as necessary. The D.E.E. agreed that the alternate solution was possible but would require additional cost to realign the road and is likely to put them behind schedule by a few days. The Institute concurred, but felt that it was a price worth paying to save the trees. A press release was sent to all major newspapers stating the incident.
The Institute did not relent and so, the Executive Engineer and the Personal Secretary to the minister of Roads and Buildings visited the Institute on Sunday to discuss the alternate plan to realign the road in order to save the banyan trees along the road. After some discussion, they agreed to realign the road by about one meter as a result of which 4 banyan trees were saved from being felled. In addition to this, two other trees, which were still near the realigned road, would be transplanted within the Institute campus. The authorities also agreed to provide all support to execute this task within the next 20 days.
