Title: Introduction to the World of Robotics
Speaker: Dr. Bipin Indurkhya
Professor
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology

Dr. Bipin Indurkhya was a professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology for the last nine years. Prior?to that he held several research and faculty positions in Takushoku University, Tokyo, Japan, State University of New York at Buffalo, Tufts University, Medford, Boston University, University of Amsterdam, Northeastern University, Boston, Institute of Computer Science and Society, Albert Ludwig University, Freiburg, Germany, Gesellschaft fuer Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung, Sankt Augustine, Germany.

He has over sixty publications that include book chapters, journal and refereed conference papers to his credit and made several presentations on his research and ideas across the world. He received his Ph.D. from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1984,??ME from Philips International Institute of Technological Studies, Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1981and BE from University of Bhopal, Bhopal, India in?1979. His research interests include creativity in language, Computational modeling of creative aspects and applying it to primary education and Robotics.

Abstract:

This talk will provide a gentle introduction to the world of robotics. Starting from a brief historical background, we will present an overview of different aspects of robotics design and control. For example, we will look at design issues for humanoid robots and biology-based robots. We will also provide a glimpse of design issues for sociable robots: that is robots designed to interact naturally with humans. At the end of the talk, we will examine how the world of robots and the world of humans is coming closer and closer, and what consequences it might have for the future.
All the discussion will be supplemented by several examples from recent robotics research.

Abstract:

How can computers be used to model creativity? We address this issue in this article by starting with an examination of the two main cognitive mechanisms of human creativity. We argue that one main hurdle with human creativity is in trying to step out of our conceptual associations. However, since computers do not have such associations, they are predisposed towards creativity. Taking this viewpoint, we outline an approach to incorporating both these mechanism of creativity in a computational system, and its application to designing reativity support systems.
