GENERAL

Q.WHAT IS IIIT ?
A.International Institue of Information Technology, Hyderabad is an autonomous, self-supporting institution started in 1998 with seed support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It received the deemed university status in August 2001. A major goal of IIIT is to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT education of the highest academic quality.

ADMISSIONS

Q. How do I get into IIIT ?
A. For the past four years, the institute has been holding its own All India Entrance Examination for selecting candidates for the UG programmes. The admissions for this year would be based on merit in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination being conducted by CBSE on 19th May 2002.

Q. What are the deadlines for admissions this year?
A. Last date for sale of application forms from the bank is 28th February 2002.

Q. Are there any RESERVATIONS at IIIT ?
A. No Reservations exist for admissions to any course at IIIT.

Q. Whom do I contact for doubts regarding the admission ?

AIEEE-2003

Q.How to obtain an application by post/personally/online ?
A.To obtain the information bulletin and the applications for AIEEE 2003 by post , candidate should send the request to the Asst Secretary , Central Board of Secondary Education , 17-B I.P. Estate , New Delhi -110002 along with a bank draft for Rs 350/- only (Rs 200/- for SC/ST candidates) payable in favour of The Secretary , CBSE at New Delhi and a self addressed envelope of 12" X 10".
The same can be obtained personally from Regional Offices of CBSE, Designated Branches of Syndicate Bank or Designated Institutions as per the list given in the Appendix IV.
The cost of information Bulletin inclusive of Examination fee is Rs. 300/- for General Category and Rs.150/- for SC/ST candidates.
The Application form can also be downloaded from the website www.aieee.nic.in
NOTE: No request should be made to the bank for sending the Bulletin by post.

Q.What should be the age criteria of the candidate?
A.Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01,1978 are eligible.
In the case of SC/ST/Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e. SC/ST/PH candidates who were born on or after October 01, 1973 are eligible.
Date of Birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/ University certificate only will be taken as authentic.

Q.What are the subject combinations required in the qualifying examination?
A. To Apply For B.E./B.Tech the student should have studied the following :
Compulsory Course : Physics & Mathematics
Any One of the optional subjects : Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Computer Science, Biology

Q.How to send an application by post?
A.The application is to be sent to The Asst Secretary (AIEEE unit),CBSE, 17-B,Indhraprastha Estate,New Delhi,110002

Q.What are the subject combinations ,total marks and number of questions for each paper?
A. Paper 1 : Physics & Chemistry (150 objective type questions with equal weightage to Physics & Chemistry )-for 600 marks
Paper 2 : Mathematics 75 objective type questions)- for 300 marks
Paper 3 Biology (Botany & Zoology 75 objective type questions with equal weightage to Botany & Zoology ) -for 300 marks
Paper 4 Aptitude Test . Part I (50 objective type questions) and Aptitude test .part 2 (Two questions to test drawing aptitude )-for 200 marks

Q.What is the course requirment for different papers?
A.The B.E/B.Tech course requires Paper 1 and Paper 2
Q.What to do if the admit card is not received by 2nd april 2003?
A.The admit card will be sent by the post to the candidates about four weeks before the conduct of the examination. In case the Admit Card is not received by 22nd April, 2003, candidate should contact the Asst Secretary, AIEEE Unit, CBSE, 17-B I.P. Estate, New Delhi-110002 along with an attested photograph. Application Form No., proof regarding remittance of fee who have made application online, and receipt issued by the Post Office for having dispatched the Application Form for getting a duplicate Admit Card.

Q.On what basis merit list will be prepared?
A.Seperate merit lists will be prepared for B.E./B.Tech., B.Pharmacy and B.Arch/B.Planning. All India Ranks would be given to the candidate scoring above a certain cut off percentage of marks (being different for General and SC/ST/Physically Handicapped category candidates). The cut off percentage would be notified at the time of declaration of AIEEE results. All India Ranks in the Merit List with total marks and marks in each subject shall be sent to all candidates appearing in AIEEE. All India Ranks and marks shall also be released on AIEEE website.

Q. What are the Different Courses offered by the institute ?
A. The following is the list of programmes running in the institute at present.

  • 4 year B.Tech program available with the option of graduating with honours.
  • 5 year Dual Degree M.Tech program
  • M.Tech in IT for Building Sciences (for architects and civil engineers)
  • Two Year M.S. by Research in CSE
  • Two year M.Tech. program
  • 1 year Post Graduate Diploma in Bio-Informatics.

Q. How flexible and comprehensive is the curriculum ?
A. The institute has intense course work supported by a flexible curriculum. The curriculum moulds itself to the needs of individual students. This means that you are not bound by rules that dictate what courses to take at what time. If you come in with a specific goal in mind, you are free to chose a sequence of courses that would be optimal in realisation of your aim..

Q. What kind of research goes on at IIIT?
A.Each of the several research centres at the institute aims at interdisciplinary research with focus on solving real life problems in a selected domain. This provides students with opportunities to get involved in cutting edge research requiring considerable thinking and innovation. Each centre comprises of institute faculty, research staff, students and domain experts visiting from collaborating organizations.

Q. What kind of practical exposure do students get?
A. A lot or research projects are undertaken at IIIT, which aim to develop cutting edge technologies and expertise. Students have the opportunity to take up internship programmes at various firms in course of their study, giving them a feel for working on projects in an industry environment.Many students have submitted research papers at reputed conferences. .


INFRASTRUCTURE

Q. What kind of Infrastructure is provided by IIIT ?
A. The institute is situated on a campus of 62 acres. It is fully residential in nature and hence is a self contained unit. There are 6 buildings that house the corporate schools. In addition to this, the academic building has the lecture halls, tutorial rooms, computer and electronics labs and offices of the administration and faculty. All classrooms are equipped with Over Head Projectors and multimedia projectors. Seminar Halls facilitate conducting symposiums, seminars, student-industry interactions and guest lectures. There is an optical fibre network connecting all buildings on campus.

Q. Are there adequate hostel facilities ?
A.There are three hostels at present with plans to construct more as and when necessary. Two of them are for men and one for the ladies. All students are provided with single seated accommodation. These Hostels together have a total of about 700 rooms. All hostels are within 5 minutes walking distance from the academic building. Round the clock electricity and water supply is ensured.

Q. Are students required to live on campus? What about students from Hyderabad ?
A. All programmes offered at IIIT are fully residential in nature.

Q. What kind of a Library does IIIT Have?
A. The institute has a well-stocked air-conditioned library with a large collection of textbooks and reference books. Apart from books, students have access to the latest magazines, international journals, newspapers and research papers. The library also stocks a huge collection of educational cd-roms and old copies of important periodicals. A new air conditioned library with 20,000-sqft floor space is under construction.

Q. What about the Computational Resources provided by the Institute ?
A.The institute has well-equipped air-conditioned computer laboratories which are allocated batch wise to students. The labs are equipped with the latest in both hardware and software. The PC to students ratio is 1:2.All terminals are part of an intranet (100MB LAN). The institute has high bandwidth Internet connectivity round the clock. Students and researchers have 24 hours access to the computational facilities. All students are encouraged to manage their own systems.


FACULTY

Q. What is the kind of Faculty at IIIT?
A. Highly qualified and experienced faculty members drawn from the best institutions worldwide with Research and Teaching experience in various areas. Presently there are 16 permanent and 12 visiting faculty members. For more information refer the faculty pages .

Q. What are the other people besides the faculty who contribute to the various programmes?
A. · Experienced R&D experts from Corporate Schools are active participants in education development and training. · Reputed academicians and renowned people from the industry regularly conduct workshops and guest lectures.

Q. What is the kind of relationship Student have with faculty?
A. · Everyone who belongs to the institute, whether a student, or a member of the faculty, or the administrative staff, works in perfect tandem with the remainder, which closely binds together the entire university. Most of the faculty stay either on campus or close to it. So they are available all through the day. All students are free to access any faculty member with their problems. To help the new students adjust in the campus environment, each of them is assigned to a faculty member known as student counselor.


ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Q. How is it ensured that all students have easy access to relavent course material?
A. · Each course has its own course website maintained by the professor and a group of students. This is where all the material relevant to the course is placed for free access by the students.

Q. Do the students get personal academic attention ?
A. Senior students take tutorials and lab sessions. The typical ratio is one assistant for every 12 students in a course. Students can freely access their tutors within and outside the assigned hours and have all their doubts cleared. These sessions are meant to augment the lectures and all assistants work under instructions of the professor concerned.


STUDENTS LIFE

Q. What is the part played by the students in the functioning of the institute ?
A. · At IIIT,the students play a pivotal role in the day to day running of the institute.It is the students who take the initiative. Through the medium of student parliament, the students run every facet of their lives.In addition to this, the students are the chief participants in organising various festivals and celebrations in the institute.

Q. What are the Cultural and Technical Activities being organised by the Institute ?
A. · Extracurricular activities are conducted regularly to enable students to discover and hone their skills in fields that are not academic in nature. Technical activities are also held on a regular basis to promote excellence in technical skills among the student body. These activities are completely organized by the student community. IIIT throws opens its gates to the outside world twice a year when it organizes Cultural and Technical Fests, which draw huge participation from colleges far and near.

Q. Are there good sport facilities ?
A. There are facilities for sports like cricket, soccer, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and basketball in addtion to a gymnasium.

Q. How do I relax in there ?
A. Apart from the two major fests, regular actvities are organised frequently within the institute to give the students a chance to relax. Recently a MOVIE CLUB has also been started in an effort to provide further means of enjoyment to the students.

Q. Is there a bank on campus?
A. The State Bank of Hyderabad has an extension counter on campus.


FEE AND FINANCIAL AID

Q. What is the fee structure ?
A. The approximate fee for the students in the academic year 2002-2003 is as follows

  • Tuition Fee
    • Rs.26,000 per semester for the UG programmes.
    • Rs. 50,000 per semester for the PG and PhD programmes.
  • Besides this, the Roomrent & Electricity Charges Rs.4,500(per semister) and the mess advance are Rs.1,500,Student activity fee Rs.500(per annum),Caution Deposit Rs.5000(Refundable) . Books and stationary cost about Rs. 2000 per semester.

Q. What scholarships are available ?
A. Batchwise scholarships are awarded pure on merit bases. It is based on performance in individual semesters. The following system is followed based on the contraint that the minimum SGPA is 8.5 to be eligible to receive a scholarship-

  • Top 5% of the class - Rs. 15,000
  • Next 5% of the class - Rs. 10,000
  • Next 5% of the class - Rs. 5,000
  • Next 5% of the class - Rs. 1,000
