Q1. What is the duration of PhD?
A1. PhD requires the completion of high quality original research work in terms of a Thesis.
In this sense, it is not a fixed duration programme. A typical PhD may take 3 to 5 years to complete.
Q2. What is the duration of Research Assistantship?
A2. 3-5 years.
Q3. How many courses are must for a PhD student?
A3.Course work is mandatory for PhD at IIIT so that the student gets the required breadth and depth.
MA/MS/MTech/BTech/BE 7 courses credits
BTech(Hons) 6 courses credits
Students with inadequate background may need more courses than the above minimum.
Students should do as many courses as necessary for breadth qualifier.
Q4. Can a student who wants to take some additional courses do so?
A4. A student who feels that he/she wants to take up some additional
courses relevant to his area of interest is free to do so. Some students
may also be advised by the faculty to take up certain courses in
addition to the required number of courses.
Q5. Is boarding on campus compulsory?
A5. It is normally compulsory for full time PhD students to stay on campus.
In case of married students, exemption is granted as the institute does not have
married accommodation. In all such cases, however, the student is advised to stay
close to the campus.
Q6. What are the residential conditions for part time (or external) PhD students?
A6. They have to complete the course work requirements as regular PhD students.
For this they have to attend classes at IIIT Hyderabad.
Q7. If a student leaves PhD in between?
A7. If the student has completed the required no. of courses in CL with a qualifying CGPA ,
he/she may apply for a PG diploma.The permission is not automatic,however,and a decision
is taken by the Dean.(Students who have received assistantship as a PhD student may not
convert to PG Diploma automatically unless explicitly so permitted.)
Q8. If a student does not get Research Assistantship in the beginning,is there a likelihood
of his/her getting it later?
A8. A likelihood of getting some financial assistance is there, depending on the academic
performance after joining the program. The final decision will, however, depend on the
availability of funds and ability of the student to do productive project work.
Q9. What is the minimum CGPA required to continue with the PhD after the course work?
A9. The minimum CGPA is 7.
