Post Graduate Programs in Computational linguistics
1. MTech in Computational Linguistics
MTech
in Computational Linguistics is a two year program. It is open
to
students from computer science, engineering, mathematics and
science
backgrounds.
|
Eligibility |
BTech CS, or any other branch of Engineering, Masters in Science |
|
Admission |
Through the entrance exam for PG courses conducted by IIIT Hyderabad |
Course curriculum for Mtech:
Students have to clear at least ten courses in the first three semesters along with two projects and thesis work is to be done in the final semester.
The courses in M-Tech program are divided in two streams. Stream-1 is of students who come from a computer science background and stream-2 is for students who come from other engineering and science background
Following core courses are common for both the streams
Compulsory courses
1. NLP-1
2. NLP-2
3. Computational Linguistics- 1
4. Computational Linguistics- 2
5. Linguistics-1
6. Linguistics-2
7. IT Workshop
Note: In addition to the above students from CS background will do a course on Advance Problem Solving and students from Non-Computer Science background will do a course on Problem solving. By the end of two semesters the students should complete at least eight courses.
In the third semester, all the students should take up at least two more, courses relevant to their specialization, from general electives offered by the computer science department at IIIT Hyderabad. They have to do two projects in the third semester. Final semester is for thesis work.
2. PG Diploma in Computational Linguistics
PG diploma in Computational Linguistics is a one year program, open to students from linguistics, language, literature and other related areas. The primary focus of the program is research in language technologies. The courses cover language analysis, basic programming skills and natural language processing (nlp) applications. Students are expected to take up projects which are relevant to at least one application.

Examinations for PhD students:
There are some Examinations to be taken by the PhD students apart from their regular course work exams. The details of these are as:
Breadth qualifiers:
A PhD student should clear a set of qualifying exams to test his or her breadth of knowledge in Computational Linguistics. Each student gets a maximum of 2 chances to clear the breadth qualifiers. They must be finished within 4 semesters for students joining with a masters degree in CS/ECE and in 6 semesters for others.(From general regulations regarding Breadth qualifiers). A candidate is eligible to appear in the breadth qualifiers only after completing the course work with a minimum required CGPA.
Depth qualifiers and dissertation proposal:
The knowledge of a student in the area of his or her dissertation will be tested in the depth qualifiers. The student is expected to defend his or her dissertation proposal in front of a suitable committee appointed
by the Dean Academics. A student is declared a PhD. candidate after this requirement is satisfied.
Syllabus for the Breadth qualifying examination:
Stream 1:
(see top of page to find out which stream you belong to).
Paper 1:Computational linguistics and Natural Language Processing
Paper 2:AI and databases
Paper 3:Data Structures & Algorithms.
Stream 2:
(see top of page to find out which stream you belong to).
