IIIT Hyderabad - Academic Programmes Overview
ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The Institute selects students for the Undergraduate Programmes through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Selections for the Postgraduate Programmes are based on an all India entrance examination conducted by IIIT in several major cities in the country in May and the application deadline is in February/March. Applications for the research programmes are considered round the year. The following is the list of programmes running in the Institute at present:
Undergraduate Programmes
- B. Tech in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
- B. Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)
- 5-year dual-degree programmes leading to B.Tech and MS by Research in CSE/ECE.
Post-graduate Programmes
M.Tech Programmes
- M. Tech Programme in CSE:
- M. Tech in VLSI & Embedded Systems
- M. Tech in Computer Science and Information Security.
- M . Tech in Computer Aided Structural Engineering:
- M. Tech in IT-Building Science:
- PG Programmes in BioInformatics:
- MTech in Computational Linguistics:
MS by Research
This is a research-oriented postgraduate programme.
The students can take advanced courses related to
their area of specialization in the first year and devote
the second year entirely towards their research thesis.
Exceptionally well prepared students can directly start
working on their research thesis in the first year, if they
have the necessary background, and complete it in
one and half year.
MSIT
MSIT follows a non-conventional teaching methodology called the Project centered Curriculum which ideally does not have classroom teaching. There would not be any written theoritical exams. The students would be evaluated based on the work done in the given tasks. MSIT offers a corporate work simulation, where all the courses require the students to work in teams. The main emphasis is on learning-by-doing. Courses require the students to work in teams. Courses are offered in sequential manner concentrating on one course at a time aiming to attain a high level of excellence. The digital content and mentor model help students to attain high level of competence. Two year full timeprogram is offered in IIIT MSIT Division. In first year students will go through compulsory IT courses and in second year students can choose electives and domain specialization.

Post-BSc dual degree programme (BTech CSE + MS by Research in Computational Natural Sciences)
This is a four year integrated course offered to meritorious Science graduates (Physics/Chemistry honors) with an aptitude for
research. The programme aims at providing breadth in Computer Science along with domain specialization with an opportunity for
thesis work in the final year. For admission details click here.
PhD
-
Regular PhD Programme :
PhD is a research programme whose centerpiece is
the dissertation. The course work and the qualifiers
are there to ensure the necessary breadth in the areas
for the student. The semester-wise courses and the
planning of PhD study is dependent on the students
background. A PhD student takes the relevant courses
in the first one or two semesters, depending on the
background, just like a student of MS by research.
After the first year, the student works on clearing the
PhD qualifying exam which tests his or her breadth of
knowledge in the field of study. This is followed by the
P h D proposal defense where the depth of the
knowledge of the student in his field of dissertation is
tested. The PhD is awarded on completion of thesis
followed by successful thesis defense.
Research Exchange Programme allows a PhD student
to spend time abroad.
-
External PhD Programmes :
This programme allows highly meritorious
out-of-station candidates to enroll for PhD and carry
out the main part of their research from their home
institute. They are required to spend their first semester
for course work in the institute, and again for a semester
later while carrying out their research.
-
Research Exchange Programme :
The Institute has
extremely ambitious programmes for the creation of the
next generation of researchers, faculty members and
innovators called the Research Exchange Programme.
The candidate registers for PhD and spends even amount
of time at the Institute and with a partner research group
abroad. Financial support is guaranteed at both ends.
He may also obtain his PhD from the partner research
group abroad. The partnership has been worked out
with leading research groups at CMU, University of
Pennsylvania, and University of Illinois among others.
Part-time Programmes and PGSSP
Professionals in the Hyderabad
area are encouraged to enroll in the PG programmes
on a part-time basis. They are recommended to initially
join through our PG Student Status Programme (PGSSP).
PGSSP allows professionals to take individual courses of their
interest without needing to enroll in a degree programme. This
is suitable for professionals interested in acquiring new knowledge in chosen areas
without regard to any degree.
Students awarded the PGSSP status can take a maximum of two courses each semester.
If they choose, based on their performance in the courses, professionals may
be formally admitted into a part-time (or full-time) degree programme.
The courses taken under the PGSSP scheme will then count towards the formal
degree. In case the candidate is interested in part-time research programmes
(MS or PhD), they should additionally meet relevant faculty members
and discuss their research plans and/or do a project with them.
Further details of the PGSSP programme are available
here.
