IIIT currently offers two post-graduate programmes in Power namely, MS by Research and Ph.D. These two programmes are completely research oriented. The curriculum and other details of the programme are given in this document.
This is a research-oriented masters programme with an expected duration of 2 years. In the first year student is required to take few compulsory and few elective courses depending on his research. In second year he/she will be completely engaged in research work. The curriculum for this program is as follows:
A student should take atleast 48 credits at the institute to be eligible for the MS degree, 24 of which should be MS thesis credits. At least 16 credits of courses at level 4000 and above should be taken for the degree. PCO credits cannot be used for the degree. Students must register for at least 12 credits for the first three semesters and for at least 4 credits thereafter.

The MS thesis has to be defended to a committee of 3 faculty members including the advisor, a faculty member from another stream area and a nominee of the Dean, Academics.
A student should complete the requirements with a minimum CGPA of 7.0 to receive the MS degree.
Full-time students: Minimum of 3 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.
Part-time students: Minimum of 3 semesters and maximum of 8 semesters.
Full-time post-graduate fees during the coursework. Thesis rates will apply for thesis credits.
The Ph.D. is a research oriented doctoral programme. The dissertation is the centerpiece of the programme. The coursework and qualifiers are there to ensure the necessary breadth in the areas for the student. The semester wise courses and the planning of Ph.D. study is dependent on the student's background. It is expected that a Ph.D. student takes the relevant courses in first two semesters like the M.S. by Research students (see above). After the first year the student works on clearing the Ph.D. qualifying exam, followed by Ph.D. proposal defense, and then Ph.D. thesis defense.

A Ph.D. student should clear a set of qualifying exams to test his or her breadth of knowledge in Power System. Each student gets a maximum of 2 chances to clear the breadth qualifiers. They must be finished within 4 semesters for students joining with a masters degree in Power Systems and in 6 semesters for others.
The student is expected to defend his or her dissertation proposal in front of a suitable committee appointed by the Dean Academics. A student is declared a Ph.D. candidate after this requirement is satisfied. It is expected that a student completes this within 2 semesters after clearing the qualifiers.
The doctoral dissertation should be approved by a panel of experts, which includes a representative of the Dean and an outside expert. The dissertation must be defended to a committee consisting of the advisor, two other faculty members from the institute, and a representative of the Dean.
The student should maintain a CGPA of 7.0 in the coursework to become a Ph.D. candidate.
Full-time students: Minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 14 semesters.
Part-time students are expected to finish by the same maximum number of
semesters.
