POWER SYSTEMS

AREAS OF RESEARCH IT Applications to Power

Information technology is playing an important role in operation and maintenance of power utilities. Various IT applications in Power are being studied at IIIT. A course on .IT applications to Power. is being offered to B Tech students in which student do various projects using IT skills for power applications.

Distribution automation

Distribution Automation involves remote monitoring and control of Distribution Systems. It also involves several decision support tools to efficiently operate the distribution systems. At IIIT development of various application functions for Distribution Automation, development of hardware devices such as remote terminal units, etc., are being taken up. Short term courses in the area of Distribution Automation shall be offered to the practicing engineers.

Energy Management Systems

Energy Management Systems (EMS) involves SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for monitoring the transmission system of an utility. In addition to SCADA, various application functions such as State Estimation, Security Analysis, Contingency Analysis, etc are required as a part of EMS. Research work in the area of application functions for EMS is being done at IIIT.

Neural Networks for Condition Monitoring of Equipment

A model has been proposed to estimate the life of stator insulation of a high voltage generator under the synergic action of electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses. Also, a diagnostic test procedure has been developed to assess the state of degradation of insulation as well as to estimate the remaining life.

Condition monitoring of power apparatus is important to avoid unscheduled outages of power plant equipment. Neural networks have been employed to recognize and classify diagnostic data patterns obtained on generator stator insulation that will help the power plant operator. Neural networks, if implemented in hardware, will accelerate the pattern recognition process in real time. So far, functioning of a single artificial neuron has been realized in hardware. Work is currently being carried out to realize a network of neurons in hardware.

Work is currently being carried out to bring information technology for power utilities management to make them more efficient. A VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design laboratory and fabrication facility is planned.
