RESEARCH HOME

The academic activity at IIIT is woven around its research. The institute combines high-quality Post-graduate programmes with vibrant undergraduate programmes. The institute is organized as area-specific Research Centres. This provides tremendous synergy and healthy cross-fertilization to the Institute’s research.

Research-led UG curriculum

Our unique UG curriculum is designed to foster research at a very early stage. The key enabling factors for this are

    1. Subject taught early, breadth waits

    2. Emphasis on skills and project work

    3. Honours programme to specialize on an area

    4. Project credits in lieu of courses

    5. Dual-degree to jump deep into an area

    6. Large number of electives

High-quality Research Programmes

The MS by Research and PhD are our research programmes. The PhD is a conventional doctoral programme with different stages including reputed coursework, the research background requirement, breadth qualifiers, depth qualifiers, thesis proposal and defense. The MS programme has minimal coursework and substantial thesis.

Research Exchange Programme

Some of IIITs research students spend part of their time with partner research groups around the world as part of the Research Exchange Programme. The partnership has been worked out with leading research groups at Carnegie Mellon University,University of Illinois, Chicago , Microsoft Research, Redmond, University of Pennsylvania etc.

Achievements:
  • IIIT Kshitij team secured third position in the world in Roborescue simulation league at Osaka, Japan 2005 out of 31 teams qualified from all over the world. We also qualified for Robosoccer 3D simulation league. We were the only teams from India to have qualified.
  • IIIT team participated in the Document Understanding Contest, 2005 organized by NIST, USA and the task was to synthesize from a set of 25-50 documents, a brief well-organized, fluent answer to the query. On the whole 31 systems from all over the world participated in the contest and according to the ROUGESU4 the IIIT system was ranked at 3rd position.
  • IIIT team participated in the competition conducted by Conference on Natural language Learning, 2005, Michigan for a shared task of assigning semantic roles to sentences and was ranked 16th.
  • One B.Tech student has been selected for demonstration of "MS SQL Learning Suit" at Microsoft Faculty Summit, Seattle.
  • Two MS/PhD students have been selected out of 500 proposals for finals in Intel India student research contest, for their research work on "Interface Independent Network-on-chip for set-top Box/VoIP Applications"
  • The project "Multipurpose Unmanned Vehicle for Rescue and Military Operations" - to safeguard rescuers' lives in hostile environments such as fire rescue, military, bomb/mine detection, underground tunnel and mine rescue operations an unmanned, battery operated vehicle with various sensors and wireless communication developed by the Building Science group won first prize in VI Mantra contest 2005 (organized by National Instruments).
